Ohio State football futures

With live legal sports betting in Ohio just on the horizon, let's take a look at Ohio State football futures odds. Futures odds refer to prop bets you can make on team and player outcomes that range from weekly to season-long. In the case of the Buckeyes, we're looking at Heisman trophy odds, odds to win the Big Ten this season, and– of course– 2023 National Championship odds.

Ohio State Football Futures Report

Ohio State is never far out of the national conversation, being one of four teams that are regularly atop odds boards (Alabama, Clemson, Georgia). This season is no exception, but expectations may even exceed recent years. For 2022, Ohio State has the third-highest odds to win the title at .

Back is Heisman finalist CJ Stroud at quarterback. Stroud finished with over 4,400 passing yards and 44 touchdowns while also completing nearly 72% of his passes. To aid his next Heisman campaign, the Buckeyes field one of the deepest receiving crews– led by Rose Bowl superstar Jaxon Smith-Njigba– and one of the nation's top backs in TreVeyon Henderson. This offense finished first in the nation in points per drive (3.98) in 2021 and tees up to be the top offense yet again in 2022.

Where the real excitement comes in is the addition of one of the top defensive coordinators in the nation, Jim Knowels, from Oklahoma State. The Buckeyes' Achilles heel was their defense last season, particularly on the ground, where they finished 38th in points per drive allowed. In their two losses, their run defense was exposed twice: against Oregon and Michigan. Knowels led Oklahoma State to the third-ranked defense in points per drive allowed and seventh in percentage of yards allowed coming via rush (29.2% is on par with Georgia and Wisconsin).

Is there any reason to be skeptical of Ohio State this season? Their offensive line wasn't ideal last season and early spring camp results say that issue may roll over into 2022.

This coming season, FanDuel Sportsbook projects the Buckeyes for 10.5 wins (over -195). Only three other teams have such a win total and none have as heavy juice on the over. Ohio State has the nation's 37th-ranked schedule, per ESPN's FPI metric.

Ohio State's Heisman Contenders

The Buckeyes have three players on Heisman odds boards, including the outright favorite, Stroud (). Voter fatigue may help his case with the 2021 winner, Alabama's Bryce Young, returning this season. Only once in history has a player won more than one Heisman, Ohio State's Archie Griffin in the 1974 and 1975. Another repeat performance like last year and Stroud will find himself back in New York.

JSN () has the second-shortest odds for non-quarterbacks on the board, behind Texas running back Bijan Robinson. He famously exploded in this past Rose Bowl against Utah, hauling in 15 receptions for a record-shattering 347 yards and three touchdowns. For the national media, this was a sudden emergence into superstardom; for Ohio State fans, this was exciting but not unexpected. JSN led the team in receptions and yards, surpassing two first-round draft picks in Garrett Wilson and Chris Olave.

Henderson () is the third of three running backs on the list besides Robinson and Alabama transfer Jahmyr Gibbs. As a true freshman, Henderson picked up 1,560 yards from scrimmage and scored 19 touchdowns. Keep in mind he has to compete with a high-volume passing offense and multiple star receivers (JSN, Marvin Harrison Jr.), making his path to a Heisman Trophy very difficult. Nevertheless, Henderson will be one of the most exciting players to watch in college football.

After four straight Big Ten titles, Ohio State watched arch rival Michigan capture their first since 2004. It was their final game against the Wolverines that ousted them from the title game. Michigan would go on to plaster Iowa 42-3 in Indianapolis.

With a lot of players exiting Michigan, Ohio State is right back in the driver's seat for the Big Ten title (). Their margin to win the Big Ten is the largest among the Power Five conferences. With The Game returning to Columbus this season, the expectation is that Ohio State takes the East division and punches another ticket to Indy.
